Lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) Territory / Victoria, B.C. — In response to Premier David Eby announcing he will scrap the carbon tax if the current or future federal government was to remove the national requirement, BC Green Party Leader Sonia Furstenau has issued the following statement: 

“This is a government with no principles and no direction. Fix the carbon tax, make it fair, show how it can improve lives, and invest in the transition we need. Letting industry pollute for free means the public continues to pay the price.

“It is obvious that the BC NDP is making up climate policy on the fly. He now says big emitters should pay for climate change – but his government is giving billions in subsidies to the fossil fuel  industry to increase fracking. BC deserves a clear, coherent plan for climate change and the clean economy, not confusing contradictions.

“Leave it to the NDP to abandon good policy for bad politics. Make the price on carbon pollution transparent and fair, use it to benefit people and communities, and stop giving sweetheart deals to the oil and gas industry.”
