VICTORIA, BC — With a harsh weather system arriving just before election day, the BC Greens are making the case for urgent forward-thinking solutions to build a more resilient province with an economy that recognizes the reality of climate change.
“We can build a province that is better equipped to withstand every crisis, including climate change,” said Furstenau. “In this election, we’ve heard from one party that wants to take us back to 1957 and another that is happy to chase them there. The BC Greens have a forward-looking plan to both build climate action and address affordability.”
The BC Greens plan focuses on affordability, resilience, and nature-based solutions:
- Mental health care for survivors of climate disasters and long-term support for those displaced.
- Carbon tax revenues re-invested in communities for climate action, including dike improvements, ecosystem restoration, and wildfire prevention.
- Support for low-income households to install heat pumps and solar panels.
- Partnerships with Indigenous communities for land and water stewardship.
- Archives Grant Program: $50,000 annually to digitize historical artifacts, preventing further cultural losses from climate disasters like the 2021 Lytton wildfires.
- Youth Climate Corps with $50 million annually to build community resilience.
- Free public transit to reduce emissions and ease the cost of living.
- Clean air and cooling centers for safe spaces during wildfire smoke and heat events.
“Extreme weather isn’t slowing down – BC can no longer afford reactive, short-sighted responses from their government.” Furstenau continued, “We need proactive solutions that protect people, communities, and our future.”
Climate change is already costing Canadian households $700 annually, and without action, these costs will rise exponentially. Events that cost $8 million in the 1970s now exceed $110 million. Without real solutions, taxpayers will bear an even heavier burden.
At the close of this campaign, it’s clear only one party is serious about climate action. “This election is about choosing how we prepare for the future,” said Furstenau. “With your support, we’ll fight to secure our watersheds, protect intact ecosystems like old-growth forests, and stop expanding fossil fuel infrastructure. Vote for real solutions. Vote for a secure future. Vote BC Green.”
