Lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen)Territory / Victoria, B.C. — After years of transformative leadership in the Cowichan Valley, BC Greens Leader and MLA Sonia Furstenau is passing the torch to a new generation of leaders as she sets her eyes on Victoria Beacon-Hill. Cammy Lockwood in Cowichan Valley and David Evans in Juan de Fuca-Malahat are poised to continue building on the legacy Sonia has created in the valley.
Furstenau commented, “Fighting alongside my community to protect Shawnigan’s drinking water, I saw firsthand that there is a disconnect between government decision-making and how those decisions affect communities. Despite the promises made by other parties, people aren’t feeling a positive impact in their daily lives. I’m running for office to continue to bring compassion, collaboration, and evidence to the decisions and policies that affect people in Victoria and to ensure that we focus on solutions for our communities.”
Furstenau’s bid for Victoria-Beacon Hill has become a pivotal moment for the BC Greens as the party gears up to secure victories across the island and lower mainland. “With strong leaders like Cammy and David on the bill, the party is well positioned to address the complex needs of the communities in Cowichan Valley while continuing to build on the progress we have made,” Furstenau affirmed, urging supporters to rally behind Lockwood and Evans.
Cammy Lockwood, candidate for Cowichan Valley, is a passionate advocate for agriculture and community well-being. Her journey from a small farm with just three hens to leading Lockwood Farms, a thriving enterprise that supplies fresh produce and eggs to thousands, is a testament to her dedication and leadership. “I came to politics when the devastating effects of climate change threatened both my farm and my children’s future,” said Lockwood. “I’m determined to see people, not corporations, at the centre of B.C. politics, and I am committed to being a strong voice for the Cowichan Valley.”
David Evans is running in Juan de Fuca-Malahat, which includes the South end of the Cowichan Valley as well as communities along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. David brings a unique perspective shaped by his years as a business owner and community advocate. His experience in building an inclusive community hub in Sooke and addressing the evolving concerns of his neighbours makes him a fitting candidate for the riding. “The status quo is incapable of rescuing us from the problems it created,” said Evans. “I’m ready to bring fresh ideas and a commitment to community-driven solutions to the Legislature.”
The BC Green Party calls on supporters to actively participate in this crucial election cycle. There are numerous ways to get involved and support these candidates—whether through volunteering, donations, or spreading the word about their campaigns.
