Lək̓ʷəŋən [Lekwungen] Territory / VICTORIA, B.C. : Sonia Furstenau, leader of the B.C. Greens, is calling out the government for failing to adequately fund provincial transit in the wake of a new report from Translink.
“It is unconscionable that the government has allowed Translink’s finances to get to this point. The affordability and climate crises are nothing new – government should have seen this coming and had a plan”.
“A 40 to 50% reduction in transit service would be devastating for people who rely on Translink to get to work, school and other daily necessities”.
“Why was there no plan for compensating for the declining fuel tax as British Columbians switch to EVs? This government seems content to give breaks on bridge tolls to drivers at a cost of $4 billion, give billions in tax breaks to the fossil fuel industry, and continue to spend big on highway expansion, but it has failed to adequately fund the transit that British Columbians rely on”.
“As wildfires burn throughout the province, we need to be rapidly expanding transit service so that we can continue to reduce transportation emissions”.
“We need a government that will plan for the future, not just make politically expedient promises during election times. Whether it’s the crisis in health care, affordability and now transit, we simply can’t afford any more short term decision making. This election, the B.C. Greens will be putting forward an evidence-based platform that will get our province out of a constant state of crisis and ensure a stable, affordable future for our province for generations to come.”
