Lək̓ʷəŋən [LEKWUNGEN] TERRITORY / VICTORIA B.C. – BC Greens Leader Sonia Furstenau released the following statement on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
“Today, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we are reminded of the urgent need to act against the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence,” said Furstenau. “As we begin 16 Days of Activism, the BC Greens are committed to ending gender-based violence in all of its forms.”
“Gender-based violence devastates communities across all cultures and regions, but its impact is disproportionately and tragically borne by Indigenous women, children, and two-spirited people.”
The BC Greens call on the government to create a specialized task force to investigate cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women, children, and two-spirited people with the following key principles:
- Civilian Oversight: Led by Indigenous communities to ensure accountability and cultural competence.
- Indigenous Women’s Leadership: A central role for Indigenous women in guiding the task force’s work.
- Guidance from Red Women Rising: Use the report’s recommendations as a framework for action.
Additionally, the BC Greens advocate for sufficient funding for survivor support services and shelters, education and prevention programs that address the root causes of gender-based violence, and strengthened legal protections for survivors and their families.
”We call on British Columbians to join the 16 Days of Activism by taking steps to educate themselves, support survivors, and advocate for change.”
