BC Greens propose universal food program, better mental health supports and technology access for K-12 students

Lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen)Territory / Victoria, B.C. — As students across British Columbia head back to school, the BC Greens recognize the growing financial strains on parents and the pressing equity issues within our education system. Leader Sonia Furstenau is introducing a forward-looking plan designed to address these challenges, ensuring that K-12 students not only have equal access to essential tools and support but also are well-prepared to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital world.

“We know that a strong  public education system is one of the best investments we can make  in a healthy society and robust economy,”  said Furstenau. “Successive governments have neglected our schools for too long. The BC Greens plan will not only catch us up but chart a new path for our education system.”

Initiatives to transform education in British Columbia include:

  • A permanent universal school food program.
  • Enhanced mental health supports.
  • Laptops for middle school and high school students.
  • Digital Learning Secretariat.

“Our plan begins with a universal school food program, making sure every student has access to nutritious meals. Healthy minds need healthy bodies, and this initiative is a cornerstone of our vision for a stronger education system,” continued Furstenau.

“We’re also prioritizing mental health by making school psychologists, registered social workers, and guidance counsellors accessible to all students. These professionals are essential in creating a supportive environment where every student can thrive.

“In today’s digital age, our kids need the right tools to succeed. It’s not as simple as banning cell phones, we need to provide the tools for success. That’s why we’re committed to providing laptops for students in grade 6 and again in grade 10 ensuring they have the technology they need for learning.

“But technology alone isn’t enough. Our digital literacy initiative will teach students to use these tools responsibly. To keep pace with the rapid evolution, especially AI, we will establish a secretariat within the Ministry of Education. While digital literacy is already part of the curriculum, this initiative will provide real time support to teachers, educational assistants, and school administrators, ensuring they have the resources needed to keep students informed, prepared, and safe in an ever-changing digital world.”

Total annual costs are projected at $600 million by 2029 which is .5% of the education budget. The BC Greens look forward to sharing more upon roll out of the 2024 platform, ensuring a stronger, brighter future for all students in BC.
