BC Greens commit to no new fossil fuel infrastructure, including PRGT Pipeline

Sep 17, 2024

SQUAMISH, BC — Today, the BC Green Party made a landmark commitment to halt any future investment in fossil fuel infrastructure, including the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) pipeline, marking a major step in addressing the climate crisis and protecting British Columbia’s future.

The announcement follows clear scientific consensus that preventing further fossil fuel development is essential to achieving a climate-safe future. The BC Greens commit to:

  • Ending the permitting of new fracking wells.
  • Setting a firm date to phase out gas production.
  • Rejecting any new LNG projects.
  • Directing the BC Environmental Assessment Office to allow the 2014 environmental certificate for the PRGT pipeline to expire.

“As the climate crisis accelerates and the warnings from scientists grow more urgent, the BC NDP continues to pour money into a dying industry,” said BC Green Leader Sonia Furstenau. “Since 2017, they’ve subsidized oil and gas while B.C. burns, floods, and suffers deadly heat waves that have claimed lives and cost billions of dollars. It’s outrageous. We can’t meet our climate targets if we keep propping up fossil fuels. This government needs to stop protecting polluters and start protecting people.”

This plan will focus on:

  1. Phasing out fracked gas production.
  2. Investing in renewable energy, including small-scale solar projects with a goal of 15% solar power generation by 2035.
  3. Supporting affordable, energy-efficient housing and community-scale renewable energy.

“B.C. is missing its climate targets, and emissions continue to rise,“ said BC Green Party candidate for West Vancouver-Sea to Sky, Jeremy Valeriote. “It’s time to put the health of our people and the future of our communities above fossil fuel profits. This plan will not only reduce emissions but also build a clean energy economy that benefits everyone.”

This shift is essential to ensure British Columbia meets its greenhouse gas reduction goals and protects the health, environment, and economy for future generations.
